Mendy confirmed the decision on his social media accounts on Sunday after making 59 appearances for the Senegalese national team.
“Jerejef (Thank you) Senegal,” he wrote in Wolof, accompanying the message with a video montage of his memorable moments in the national team.
Born in France, Mendy made his international debut in 2018 under former Senegal coach Aliou Cissé. He went on to become a key member of the team that won the Africa Cup of Nations against Egypt on penalties in 2021.
He also featured at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and remained part of Senegal’s squad at the 2026 edition in the United States, where the team was eliminated by Belgium in a 3–2 round-of-16 defeat.
At club level, Mendy has played for Marseille, Reims, Rennes and Chelsea. He currently represents Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli.
Mendy was also part of the Senegal side that won last year’s Africa Cup of Nations on the pitch after defeating Morocco 1–0. However, the title was later awarded to the hosts by the Confederation of African Football, with Senegal’s appeal scheduled to be heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on October 8.
Together with captain Kalidou Koulibaly, Idrissa Gana Gueye and Sadio Mane, Mendy was regarded as one of the leading figures of Senegal’s golden generation.
The Senegal national team, now coached by Patrick Vieira, paid tribute to the goalkeeper following his announcement.
“There are careers that are measured in caps, trophies and statistics. And then there are those that are measured by the place they hold in the memory of a people. Edouard Mendy, your story with the Lions now belongs to that category,” the team wrote.
